House in sinjyo Residential Building

House in sinjyo

House in Sinjyo is a single-story residential building in Tanabe, Wakayama, Japan. The site sits below a busy national highway bypass, so the house has no openings on the outer walls, which protects the privacy of the couple who live there. A square plan fills the small flat area of the sloping site. A light court on the south side brings in light and air, and is shared by the living room and the bathroom. The court is set two steps above the living room. A wall that stops below the ceiling divides the living area from the water area. The structure is wooden.

House in sinjyo Residential Building by Kiyoshi Sugimoto was highlighted as a grand example of architectural design by the A' Design Award. House in sinjyo Residential Building received the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2021. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design competition that recognizes excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
