Lap and Wrap
Lap and Wrap is a single-story house built on a sloping urban site. The retaining wall and the building foundation are combined into one structure, so a larger part of the land is returned to the courtyard. The foundation is slanted rather than vertical, which gives the concrete a clear expression. The outer wall overlaps like a stratum and wraps around the house in a continuous band. No windows face the road. On the garden side, many windows and wide eaves form an intermediate area that joins inside and outside.
Lap and Wrap House by Hatsuo Morimoto has been identified as an exceptional example of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Lap and Wrap House received the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2024. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, meritocratic, just and fair design award that celebrates excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
