Vinegar Vats

This incredible adaptation of a disused vinegar factory was carried out in an entirely sustainable manner. Not only does it use a natural stack effect to cool the space, its construction was done with a zero waste solution. No skips were used. Everything on site was re-used, recycled, or re-purposed. The basement was converted into an architecture studio with a 3 storey family home above. The vats were cleverly repurposed as planters, workstations, toilets, laundry, and even a fishpond. Natural light pours into the building as a result of removing a third of the roof to create a garden court.

Panorama Villa

Alluding to the structure of a typical Mani village, the concept is conceived as a series of individual stone fragments revolving around the atrium, entrance and living spaces. The rough volumes of the residence open a dialogue with their natural surroundings, while the rhythm of their openings either ensures privacy or invites in panoramic views of the horizon, constructing a direct experience of successive and diverse narratives. The Villa is located in Navarino Residences, a collection of luxury villas for private ownership at the heart of Navarino Dunes resort.

House in Toyonaka

House in Toyonaka is a private residence in a dense residential district in northern Osaka, Japan. The site is surrounded by closely packed houses and has no distant views, so privacy was the main concern. The house therefore avoids large windows and stays closed to the street. A glass floor, split-level floors and skylights let the line of sight pass slightly through each part of the interior, reducing the sense of enclosure. The limited daylight also makes the passing of time clearly perceived. The total floor area is 107.62 square meters.

House for Parents

House for Parents is a residence on Amami-Oshima Island, an area with a severe subtropical climate and frequent typhoons. A large rectangular roof is supported by a steel framework structure with a four meter span. The roof creates a cool and shaded interior, similar to the space under large trees. The concrete walls stand independently from the roof structure, so the floor plan is free from restrictions caused by columns. Projecting concrete walls extend the common areas outward toward the surrounding island landscape.

Firm Hall

Firm Hall is a banquet and community centre in Chennai, India. The project is an adaptive reuse of an existing residential bungalow at a busy intersection. The outer walls were kept intact, while internal walls were altered to form one large event space on each floor. The ground floor holds a family hall, the first floor a hall with tele-conferencing, and the terrace a semi-open pavilion with a landscaped garden. The facade combines a textured brown mass below and a white mass with screen patterns cut from aluminium sheets and lit from behind.
